Home Exercises After Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery is a method in which a specialist carefully removes a painful hip joint with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint frequently produced using metal and plastic segments. This procedure is valuable to remove pain from the hip joints.

A person experiences some side effects after this medical procedure such as blood clots, fracture, infection, and change in length. One should do some exercises to get rid of these symptoms because it will be helpful to quick recovery.

Routine exercise also help to reduce swelling, improve sleep, prevent blood clots, improve balance, control pain, and increase activity tolerance.

This assists to reduce swelling and hazard of blood clots. You should pump your whole foot up and down. Repeat this exercise for 10 times.

Breathing

You should sit with relaxed shoulders. Then, breathe in and out slowly through your nose. You should repeat this for 6 times, every hour.

Lying

You must lie on your back with legs straight. You should squeeze lower buttocks together gently, as if holding a pencil between your buttocks. Then, hold for 6 seconds. You have to repeat this 8 times a day.

Knee Straightening

You should recline on bed and place a folded pillow under your knee. Then, lift your foot up to straighten your knee. After some time, slowly lower leg down.

You should consult your surgeon or physiotherapist before starting this exercise.

You should lie on your back with one leg bent, then turn on core muscles to keep back and pelvis still. After this, you should slide straight leg out to the side, then re-set core muscles and slide the leg back. You have to repeat this 6 times a day. You should also repeat it on the other side.

Hip Stretches

You must lie on your back with both knees bent. You should use towel to bring one thigh up, make sure not more than 90°. Then, slide the other leg down the bed, until you feel a stretch in front of the hip and do not arch your lower back. After some time, slide the straight leg back to bent position. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds. Repeat this 4 times a day.

Hamstring Stretch

You should sit with your back, thighs and feet supported. You must turn on core muscles. Then, squeeze a big rolled towel between your thighs and lift one foot up to straighten knee. You should hold the stretch for 10 seconds. You should repeat this exercise 4 times a day.
