How to Fix Bowed Legs and Knock Knees?

Knock knees and bow legs are common situations where the knees and ankles do not align with each other. A slight angle of inclination or knocking is considered normal. However, if a person has extreme knock knees or bow legs, then he/she should go to an orthopedic surgeon for a checkup.

What is the Meaning of Bowlegs?

Bowlegs or genu varum is a condition where the feet and ankles are close to each other while the knees extend far apart. Children typically outgrow bowlegs sometime after 18-24 months of age.

What is the Meaning of Knock knees?

Knock-knees or  Genu valgum is an abnormal curve of the legs that causes the knees to touch or nearly touch while the feet are apart. Knees lean towards each other and legs remain apart. It usually affects both legs but it may happen that only one knee is hitting the other. It affects people of all ages.

Bowlegs- Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Causes

Bowlegs corrects itself in infants as they grow. However, in rare cases, they indicate a critical medical condition. The following are the reasons: –

  • Rickets-  An abnormal bone position that develops due to vitamin D deficiency.  This causes the bones of the legs to grow in curvature instead of straightening. Sometimes, it can also be hereditary.
  • Blount’s diseaseA bone growth disorder that affects the bones of the leg.
  • Knee injury – Injuries, tumors, or infections around the knees at an early age can also be the cause of bow legs.
  • Overweight – Obesity and being overweight.
  • Early walking- the child started moving at a very young age.

When should you go to the doctor?

Little bow legs are not such a concern. However, you should consult an orthopedic surgeon in the following situations:

  • The legs are not getting straight with age.
  • The legs are curved at different angles that mean curves are asymmetric.
  • The child is experiencing pain, is disabled, has difficulty walking, or has weakness in the legs.

Treatment of BowLegs

The orthopedic surgeon will examine the legs and confirm the cause through a specialist examination. Treatment will depend on it. Body legs are normal and do not require any type of treatment. Children with rickets are treated with vitamin D supplementation in the diet. Blount diseased bowlegs can be rectified with surgery or braces.

Knock Knees- Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Causes

Knock knees or Genu valgum is a situation where the knees are incorrectly inclined and ‘knocked’ against each other. It can be achieved at any age. It can also be the reason for pain in the knees and imperfection if left without treatment. It usually develops when a child learns to balance and walk. If the condition is present after the age of seven, it is called knee syndrome.

Causes are as follows:

  • Injury – a physical effect de-aligns the joint
  • Arthritis – a collapse of a bone or joint
  • Osteomyelitis – swelling of the bones of the legs
  • Kidney failure – failure of renal function
  • Rickets- Deficiency of Vitamin D
  • Genetic conditions – inherited
  • Fractures that deformed in the union
  • Bone tumors – tumors near the joints
  • Obesity – carrying overweight by Feet

When should you go to the doctor?

If a toddler has  Knock knees, it is most likely to become evident by three years of age. A slight angle is considered normal, which settles to about 5-9 degrees by the age of seven. A large angle that persists with the following symptoms necessitates consultation with an orthopedic surgeon.

  • Visual impairment in children under two years of age.
  • A knock-in child that worsens with age rather than being correct.
  • Pain in hips or knees
  • Pain in the ankle or feet.
  • Struggle while walking or running.
  • Rigid joints with a low range of motion.
  • Progression of knee joint arthritis

Treatment of Knock Knees

An Orthopedic surgeon will diagnose the extent of the situation. Dr. Tanveer Bhutani, an orthopedic specialist at the Eva Ortho Center, says: Preliminary examination assesses the physical condition of the legs and walk. We include X-ray alignment testing and radio imaging over the whole hip and ankle area. ” The accurate place and the axis of the deviation sum up the diagnosis.

For extreme cases, the answer is knee realignment. Surgery is the best way to get rid of it because braces and other devices do not give satisfactory results. Eva Orthopedic Center has a lot of expertise in managing all aspects of knock knees.

For growing children, minimally invasive knee surgery may be performed. However, the process is usually postponed until they are 10 years old.

If there are other underlying causes such as infection, tumor, or bone disease, they are addressed clinically.

Things to Remember

You don’t have to limit children who are physically inclined to run, walk or play like other children of their age. If a child has sores and sprains on his knees then he or she has Knock Knees.
